First days in a new home
The first few days after moving are a big experience for a kitten. The change of smell, surroundings, and people can be stressful, so it's important to give them time and space to adjust.
1. Calmness and patience
During the first few days, your kitten may be withdrawn, hiding in a box, bed, or other safe place. This is completely normal behavior. Don't force your kitten to come out or interact with you – it's best to let them decide for themselves when they're ready to come out.
2. Eating and drinking – no panic
It's common for a kitten to not eat or drink very little for the first few hours or even 24 hours. This is due to adaptation stress and is usually not a cause for concern. Bowls of water and food should always be available near the kitten's hiding place.
3. Safe Observation
If a caregiver is concerned about whether a kitten is eating, drinking, or using the litter box, a good solution is to place a small camera or phone nearby. This allows them to discreetly observe the kitten without disturbing its sense of security.
4. Every kitten is different
Some kittens adapt to their new home very quickly, becoming curious and playful from day one. Others need more time to feel comfortable. Both reactions are completely normal – the key is adapting to the individual kitten's temperament.
5. Gentle play and contact
If your kitten is out and about on its own and shows interest in its surroundings, you can gently suggest playing with a fishing rod or other calming toy. Play helps relieve stress and build initial bonding, but it should never be forced.
6. Limiting incentives
In the first few days, it's best to avoid too many visitors, noise, and intense stimuli. A calm atmosphere at home significantly facilitates the kitten's adaptation and helps it feel safe more quickly.
